Just speculating here, but I think a Dragon Warrior (1st edition) module has some potential. When you play the game, the main character’s essential statistics are very simplistic:
Level
Hit Points
Magic Points
Gold
Experience
Delve a little deeper, and you get to the guts of the character sheet:
Name
Strength
Agility
Max HP
Max MP
Attack Power
Defense Power
Weapon
Armor
Shield
Max HP and MP are awarded separately at each level, and Attack and Defense Power seem to be a combination of gear plus Strength and Agility. The icing on the cake would be giving players 8 general actions to use while exploring:
Talk
Status
Stairs
Search
Spell
Item
Door
Take
…and these are guidelines for the GM, too. If the GM designs something that requires an action beyond one of those, it probably doesn’t belong in a Dragon Warrior-themed game!
Parting thought: the first Dragon Warrior is mostly about earning money to gather better gear, to kill tougher monsters who help you earn money faster, to buy better gear etc. So while that’s an important element, one could focus on the game’s other, more interesting, aspects: gaining access to and exploring new areas – whether they’re blocked by dangerous barriers, locks, or tougher monsters, and finding special items that are required to move to proceeding phases of the game/campaign.
